The Ahaldara Viewpoint is a bare, grassy hilltop in the Shelpu Hills of Darjeeling district, West Bengal, and it is known for a wide, open sunrise. At about 4,500 ft, it offers a full 360 degree view of the Kanchenjunga range, with the Teesta river winding toward the plains below.
It sits roughly 5 km from Latpanchar and 45 to 56 km from NJP. This 2026 guide covers the entry fee, cottage rates, road conditions, best months to visit and a simple itinerary, so you can plan your trip with confidence. Where sources disagree, you get the honest range.

What kind of place is Ahaldara, and why is it famous?
Ahaldara (also spelled Ahal Dara or Ahaldhara) is the highest point of the Shelpu Hills. This ridge separates the Sittong orange valley from the forest of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. With no trees on top, nothing blocks the view.
It is not a village. Expect a ticket gate, a short climb, a tea slope, a few cottages and tea and momo stalls. The sunrise is the whole reason to come.
Ahaldara altitude: 4,500 ft, 5,000 ft or 8,500 ft?
Most listings and guest reviews say about 4,500 ft, so plan for that. One October 2025 blog says above 5,000 ft. A figure of 8,500 ft circulates on social media, but no source supports it. Nearby Namthing Pokhri is also listed anywhere from 4,000 to 5,000 ft.
Who Ahaldara does not suit
Skip it, or keep it to a short stop, if you:
- Travel between June and September, when cloud and landslides dominate
- Need a guaranteed mountain view, because haze can hide the peaks
- Want restaurants, shops or nightlife
- Expect an empty hilltop, since weekends bring crowds and new homestays are going up
- Dislike narrow, patchy roads

Ahaldara Sunrise View Point
A check post and ticket counter sit at the foot of the hill. Walking from the gate to the top is about 400 m. If you drive in, you park and climb the last stretch, which sources put at 100 to 300 m. Be on top 30 minutes before sunrise and wear a windproof jacket.
Tagore Hill, the sleeping profile
Near the viewpoint, a rock outline is said to resemble Rabindranath Tagore lying down. Treat it as a five minute photo stop that needs clear air.
The tea-garden slope and the cinchona road
Small tea plots frame most Ahaldara photographs. Walk the edges in late afternoon and ask before stepping between bushes, since it is someone’s crop. Cinchona, the quinine tree, lines the road up from Latpanchar.
Namthing Pokhri and the Himalayan salamander
This seasonal pine ringed lake lies about 1 km from the Ahaldara base. It fills in August and September and is usually dry by late October. It is a breeding site of the protected Himalayan salamander. In September 2026, the Kurseong forest division said it was one of three wetlands proposed as salamander sanctuaries, so expect tighter rules. Stay on the path and do not touch the animals.
Latpanchar and Sarsari Dara
Latpanchar is a cinchona village on the edge of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and a known spot for the Rufous-necked Hornbill. Sarsari Dara, a 1.5 km walk away, is a free viewpoint. Sanctuary trails close from mid June to mid September.
Sittong: orange orchards and the Lepcha monastery
Orchards fruit from November to January, with December the peak. Some owners charge about ₹50 for entry or parking. The mud and bamboo Lepcha monastery at Upper Ghalaytar has no fee, only a donation box.
Mongpu and Tagore’s house
Mongpu is 15 to 18 km away. It has Rabindra Bhavan, the bungalow where Tagore stayed, plus an orchid garden and the cinchona factory town. It suits a half day if you are heading to Darjeeling or Kalimpong.

How to reach Ahaldara
No bus or shared vehicle goes to the viewpoint. You need a reserved car.
From NJP, Siliguri or Bagdogra (shortest route):
- Take Sevoke Road (NH10) to Kalijhora, about 28 km from Siliguri.
- Turn left and climb 13 to 15 km of narrow forest road to Latpanchar.
- Drive about 5 km further to Ahaldara.
A second turn beyond Kalijhora, toward Birik Dara, climbs through Shelpu and reaches the ridge in about 12 km.
From other bases: From Darjeeling, go down to Dilaram, then take the Bagora road into Sittong and climb up. From Kurseong, the road runs through Bagora and Mahaldiram and passes Namthing Pokhri. From Kalimpong, come through Rambi and Mongpu.
Cost: One 2026 stay listing quotes ₹2,500 one way from NJP. Other operators quote ₹3,000 to ₹4,000, depending on season.
Road warning: The Kalijhora to Latpanchar climb is steep and often potholed. A landslide cut NH10 near Coronation Bridge on 25 June 2026. Call your stay on the morning of travel and ask which approach is open. Do not drive the approach road after dark.
Where to stay: Ahaldara homestay and cottage options
There are no hotels. The ridge has a small set of cottages and homestays, usually sold per head with breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Published 2026 rates:
- Ahaldara Homestay (beside the viewpoint): ₹1,750 a head for doubles, ₹1,550 for triples, plus 5% GST
- Ahaldara Chamling Homestay: ₹1,400 a head, tents ₹1,200
- Humro Home cottages (tea plantation): about ₹3,000 a night for a four person cottage
- Latpanchar homestays: about ₹1,100 to ₹1,500 a head
Rooms are basic, with attached toilets and geyser or bucket hot water. Power cuts happen. One stay shuts its kitchen and gate around 8 pm, so avoid late arrivals. Staying in Sittong costs less, but every return trip to the ridge means a steep climb. Book early for October, November, late December and long weekends.
Best time to visit Ahaldara: weather month by month
No station publishes ridge data, so these are Kurseong averages (high/low) from 2010 to 2020. Use them for planning, not as a forecast.
- October: 25/17°C. Skies clear, sunrise about 5.35 am. Lake dries out.
- November: 23/13°C. Dry and clear. The safest single month.
- December: 20/10°C. Long views, peak oranges and crowds. Sunrise about 6.16 am.
- January: 19/8°C. Coldest dawns, some haze.
- February: 23/10°C. Mild days, but haze can hide the peaks.
- March and April: 27/13°C to 29/17°C. Pleasant, hazier. Sunrise about 5.46 am in March.
- May: Humid, rain on about half the days.
- June to September: Heavy rain, low cloud, landslide risk. Avoid unless the salamander lake is your goal.
It does not snow at Ahaldara.
Ahaldara, Sittong or Latpanchar: where should you sleep?
All three sit on one loop of about 12 km.
- Ahaldara: Sunrise and sunset from your door. Few beds, wind, power cuts.
- Sittong: Many homestays, orange orchards, river walks. Most stays lack a big view.
- Latpanchar: Hornbills and forest trails. Best with binoculars.
Sleep on the ridge for one night only if the forecast is clear. Otherwise base lower and drive up before dawn.
Suggested itinerary: one or two nights on the Sittong loop
One night at Ahaldara
- Leave NJP or Siliguri by 9 am and stop for tea at Latpanchar.
- Check in by lunch, walk the tea slope and watch sunset from the top.
- Eat early and ask your host when to wake up.
- Reach the hilltop 30 minutes before sunrise.
- Walk to Namthing Pokhri, then exit via Sittong and Mongpu or return to Siliguri.
Two nights: Latpanchar, Ahaldara and Sittong
- Day 1: Drive to Latpanchar and take a guided forest walk.
- Day 2: Sunrise at Ahaldara, then move to Sittong for orchards, the monastery and Jogighat bridge.
- Day 3: Leave through Mongpu or return by Kalijhora.
Practical notes
- Network: A February 2024 visitor found Airtel strong near the stalls. Ask your stay which SIM works.
- Cash: No ATM on the ridge. UPI fails when the signal does.
- Food: Day visitors get tea, momos and snacks at stalls only.
- Medical: Latpanchar has a basic dispensary. Serious cases go to Kurseong or Siliguri.
- Pack: Windproof jacket, grip shoes, torch, power bank, binoculars.
- Safety: The top has open edges and unreliable railings. Keep children close.
- Responsible travel: Carry your plastic out, keep music off at dawn and stay out of tea rows.
